There is something special about photographing a historic home.
New homes often showcase modern design and convenience, but historic homes tell stories. Their walls have witnessed generations of families, changing neighborhoods, and the growth of the communities around them. In the Green Bay area, some of Wisconsin's most beautiful homes stand as reminders of the city's rich past.
As a real estate photographer, I find myself slowing down when I approach a historic property. The craftsmanship immediately draws my attention. The detailed woodwork, original stained-glass windows, wraparound porches, and hand-carved moldings reveal a level of artistry that is difficult to replicate today.
Many of Green Bay's most notable historic homes can be found throughout neighborhoods near downtown and along the river. The stately residences in the Astor Historic District showcase architectural styles ranging from Queen Anne and Colonial Revival to Tudor and Craftsman. Nearby, the beautifully preserved buildings surrounding the historic Hazelwood Historic House offer a glimpse into life in Green Bay during the nineteenth century.
One of the most recognizable homes in the area is the Neville Public Museum Mansion, while the historic homes surrounding Astor Park continue to reflect the prosperity and growth of Green Bay's early business leaders and entrepreneurs.
Photographing these homes is about more than documenting rooms and features. It is about capturing character. The afternoon light filtering through original leaded-glass windows. The patina of a century-old staircase. The way a front porch welcomes visitors much as it did generations ago.
Historic homes connect us to the people who came before us. They remind us that every home has a story, but some stories have been unfolding for more than a hundred years.
In Green Bay, those stories are still being written, one historic home at a time.
